Your 4th Amendment rights as a US citizen may soon be threatened by CISPA !!

“Imagine a cyber police state led by giant tech companies like Facebook, legalized or deputized to conduct surveillance and interception of your communication, and reporting back to government. Imagine too that you have no right to be notified, and no right to sue if wrongfully targeted. That’s what CISPA will make possible” !!
– Evelyn Castillo-Bach

Here’s an excerpt from the EFFs – Stop Cyber Spying Week

Congress is currently considering CISPA – the Cyber Intelligence Sharing & Protection Act – a bill that purports to protect the United States from “cyber threats” but would in fact create a gaping loophole in all existing privacy laws. If CISPA passes, companies could vacuum up huge swaths of data on everyday Internet users and share it with the government without a court order. I oppose CISPA, and I’m calling on Congress to reject any legislation that:
* Uses dangerously vague language to define the breadth of data that can be shared with the government.
* Hands the reins of America’s cybersecurity defenses to the NSA, an agency with no transparency and little accountability.
* Allows data shared with the government to be used for purposes unrelated to cybersecurity.

Join me in opposing this bill by posting this statement on your own page and using this online form to send a letter to Congress against CISPA:

Here’s more info about exactly what CISPA is and whats wrong with it over at the EFF:

Check out the info-graphic (by Lumin Cosulting) below to see whats possible with CISPA… I assure you it’s nothing good !!

** side note: In my own way of protesting this ridiculous bill (if passed) will be to cancel my Facebook account :)

DOOM Roguelike (My new addiction)

March 3, 2012

Are you a Doom fan ?? Do you like RPGs or a good dungeon crawl game like Nethack ? Doom Roguelike may be your cup of tea !!

First if you don’t know what Doom is then you’ve been living under a rock ;)

Second, even if you’ve heard of Doom you may NOT know what a “Roguelike” game is .. so to sum it up (from Wikipedia) ..

The roguelike is a sub-genre of role-playing video games, characterized by levelrandomization, permanent death, and turn-based movement. Most roguelikes featureASCII graphics, with newer ones increasingly offering tile-based graphics. Games are typically dungeon crawls, with many monsters, items, and environmental features. Computer roguelikes usually employ the majority of the keyboard to facilitate interaction with items and the environment. The name of the genre comes from the1980 game Rogue.

DoomRL follows the same premise of the original Doom games..

(from the manual)

DoomRL is based on the world from id Software’s(tm) game Doom(tm). You’re
the sole surviving marine from a squad sent to investigate a distress call
from the moonbase of Phobos. It turns out that all hell has broken loose
on the planet… literally.

Your quest in DoomRL is to descend into the moonbase complex, find the
source of this evil outbreak, and destroy it at all costs.

Unlike many other roguelikes, DoomRL is intended to be simple and easy to
get into. To that end, there is a limited inventory, maps of the size of
one screen, and one item per tile. The number of keys you need to
remember is also quite small compared to many other games.

DoomRL offers two modes of play, classic ASCII or the upgraded graphic (TILES) version. Both have an updated soundtrack and sound effects. The game is more than just run n’ gun and does require some strategy to upgrade your weapons, navigate the levels and plan your defense against the hellspawn.

Doom RL is cross platform (Win,Linux,Mac) it’s also super portable.. just extract to a thumb drive and you’ve got a quick adventure waiting on your lunch break !! You could even SSH into your Linux box and play from a terminal if you so desire.

Go get your copy HERE !! ..and yes it’s FREE, but if you make a donation you’ll be able to beta test future releases and support a great project that keeps retro adventure gaming alive in a world of XBOX’s and Playstations.

Here’s some screenshots I took during a quick game..

You can checkout plenty of ASCII screens over on the Chaosforge forum.

Enjoy !!!

A small update …

December 13, 2011

I’ve updated the Linux page to reflect my top two choices of Linux distros and got rid of some outdated documentation.

Also on the Contacts page I’ve changed my Twitter account to my personal account. I love technology and I enjoy having this website. (Hopefully it’s helped a few people out so far) This site is “me” so why have two separate Twitter IDs ?? Silly right ?  So come find me in the Twittersphere @lnxr0x !!

That’s all for now !!

Secure your Wi-Fi !

December 5, 2011

There’s a number of reasons you want to put a password on your wireless connection. The main reason is so the kid next door can’t illegally download the newest Lady Gaga album or other nefarious acts using your connection !!

Having a secure connection can make it harder for someone to “sniff” your wireless traffic to steal sensitive or private information. Even if your Wi-Fi is secure you also want to make sure you are connecting to websites using SSL to prevent  session hijacking. (look for HTTPS in the address bar) See my previous post on setting Facebook to always use HTTPS HERE.

When securing your Wi-Fi make sure you’re using WPA or WPA2 for the encryption type (WEP can be broken in about 10 min) Although WEP is better than nothing :D

You can also disable network name (SSID) broadcast so your network will become partially invisible !

If you have any questions please leave comments or shoot me an email.

That’s all for now !!

The 400Mhz Challenge !!

August 16, 2011

I’m still alive !!! I haven’t been posting lately because I’ve been spending my free time outdoors !! (walking, hiking, adventuring, etc.)

The time that I have had online over the past month or so has been spent mostly on my ancient IBM 400Mhz Pentium II laptop !! I wanted to see if it’s possible to be productive using a really outdated PC ..

Conclusion: It works well !! .. a little slow at times, can’t stream video or have more than a couple tabs open in Chrome at once, but it IS functional !! Just goes to show you don’t NEED the newest, fastest PC to access information an use technology to get stuff done !!

I don’t recommend everyone go back to the stone-age, but maybe your PC doesn’t need to be sent to the scrapyard.. maybe it just needs a fresh install of Windows, OSX or Linux. :)

So to everyone out there with a 5-10 year old computer, if it does what you need it to do… keep rockin’ it old school !!

Bypass Your Login Password !!

April 17, 2011

If you’ve ever forgotten your password to login to Windows (or Linux) or need legitimate access to a computer that’s locked then read on…

I’m puttin’ on my Grey Hat and showing a nice utility called Kon-Boot. Kon-Boot is a CD image you can download and burn to disc. It’s small enough to fit on one of those nice mini-discs for easy concealment… not that you’d be using this tool for any nefarious purposes ;)

There’ also a nice tutorial on using KonBoot from a USB key HERE .. courtesy of Iron Geek.

Below is a short video I made showing KonBoot in action .. I ran it in a virtual machine but the results will be the same if run from a CD or USB key.

Download the newest version of Kon-Boot HERE

password: kon-boot

Enjoy !!
